Drapers’ Awards for Teaching

The Drapers’ Awards for Excellence in Teaching have now been wound up, and have been replaced by the new Drapers’ Awards for Teaching from 2011/12 onwards.

The Drapers’ Awards for Teaching are designed to allow students to nominate and participate in the choosing of the staff who have made the most significant contribution to teaching in each school. Academic and non-academic staff involved in undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes are eligible (Faculty Deans for Taught Programmes and School Directors of Taught Programmes are not eligible)

Nomination and award process

The nomination process starts with nominations by students at programme level and normally a minimum of 5 students need to nominate a member of staff. The nomination is a simple statement (max 200 words) of why that member of staff’s contribution is exceptional.

Following nomination, the relevant Programme Director and Student Course rep will complete a structured form under four headings: quality of interactions with students, availability to students (completed by the student rep), contribution to the programme, contribution to teaching and learning activities across the School/ Institute and College (completed by the Programme Director). This will be on a five point scale with an option to include free text of up to 100 words.

Nominations will then be judged by a Faculty-level panel comprising the Dean for Taught Programmes and Student Faculty and Year representatives.

Provided that there are suitable candidates, it is expected to make one award per School so that there are around 20 awards per year. Awards would be announced and distributed as part of the Course Reps annual awards ceremony that is organised by the QM Students’ Union.

Timescale for 2011/12

The scheme will be launched on 9th January 2012 with the closing date for nominations being January 27th. Course reps and programme directors will be asked to submit their forms by 17th February. The judging panels will meet by February 24th.
