Getting started

Selecting the capture type

Q-Review Logo

This page helps you to decide which type of recording would be best for your needs. The Q-review service allows you to select a recording method that will meet your teaching needs best. When planning your recording, there are two main options available to you:-

  • Lecture Capture
  • Personal Capture
  • Click on a question to see the answer.

What is the difference between Lecture Capture and Personal Capture recording? – click to expand/contract
Lecture capture – this recording method uses equipment in a fixed teaching room installation setup (the available recording locations are listed in the question/answer section below). You can request for a recording to be scheduled by completing an online form.
Linked here is an example of Lecture Capture footage (English Literature – Representing London, 51m48s) by Markman Ellis which shows you the output a user would see.

Personal capture – this recording method uses installed software and equipment connected to a desktop or laptop computer. You can borrow a laptop/webcam or install the Personal capture software onto your own device.
Linked here is a sample of Personal Capture footage (Personal Capture – a brief example, 1m16s), which shows you the output a user would see.

The differences in preparation requirements, equipment needs, recording location and teaching activity should help you to decide which capture method would be most appropriate for your needs. The table below summarises and compares the organisation needs for delivery via the two methods.

NOTE: Regardless of which recording method is used, your are required to obtain the presenter’s consent before the published recording can be made available.

How do I obtain the presenter’s consent? – click to expand/contract
This depends on whether you are making a standard recording or non-standard recording (recordings which are not part of formal academic programmes at QMUL, e.g. visiting guest speaker/conference keynote address).

      Standard recording consent
In order to gain the presenter’s consent in the case of a standard recording, you will need to fully complete the online form (Q-review request form – see presenter details section).

      Non-standard recording consent
In order to gain the presenter’s consent in the case of a non-standard recording, you will need to complete the form (Q-review consent form for non-standard recordings). You will need to return the completed form with the signature of the presenter, before the recording can be made available.

Why would I select the Lecture Capture recording method? – click to expand/contract
    • You are delivering a session that you would like to record in a room/lecture theatre with the hardware installed (see list within answer to question above – Where is Q-review currently installed?).
    • You are interested in automating the recording of teaching activity.
    • You would like to capture footage using the visualiser, in one of the rooms with a fixed hardware installation.
Why would I select the Personal Capture recording method? – click to expand/contract
    • You are planning to record in a location that does not have the fixed hardware installed (see list within answer to question above – Where is Q-review currently installed?).
    • You require greater flexibility in when you complete the editing of your recorded footage (Lecture capture footage requires that you complete any edits within 14 days of the recording taking place).
